Hard skills are specific, technically defined, learnable and objectively measurable competencies — knowledge and abilities acquired through formal education, professional training, or structured experience. Examples include: programming in Python, financial modelling in Excel, spoken fluency in Dutch, project management certification (PMP, Prince2), machine operation, surgical technique, or food safety regulation knowledge.
In practice
Hard skills form the baseline minimum for most roles — a finance role requires accounting knowledge; a developer role requires coding ability. They are the easiest to assess objectively (through certifications, technical tests, portfolio review) and the easiest to specify precisely in job descriptions. In recruitment, hard skills screening is typically the first filter — candidates lacking specific technical requirements are usually eliminated early. However, they are also the most contextual: someone with intermediate Python skills may be perfectly adequate for a data reporting role but insufficient for a machine learning engineering position. Hard skills also have a shorter shelf life than soft skills — a programming language expertise can become obsolete in 5–10 years, while communication or problem-solving ability remains valuable indefinitely.
